Google Latitude Gets Yahoo Personal on Google Talk, Gmail Chat

Google has ported its Latitude application to Google Talk and Gmail Chat, allowing users to post their real-time location onto those Google sites. In addition, another application publishes the user’s Latitude location to their blog or Web site. Geo-location solutions are a growing part of the IT industry, with both Google and Yahoo releasing applications for geographical pinpointing.

Google announced, on May 4, two new applications for its Google Latitude service, which allows users to both post their own real-time location on a map while also seeing the position of any other friends who use the service. The new programs expand the service’s functionality by posting the user’s location to either a personal blog or Web site, or else Google Talk and Gmail Chat.
Having originally made its debut on Feb. 4, Google Latitude is now available on Android-powered devices with Maps v3.0 and above, most BlackBerry devices, most devices with Windows Mobile 5.0 and above, and most Symbian S60 devices. Functionality for the iPhone and iPod touch is apparently "coming soon," according to Google’s Web site.

The two new applications are Google Talk location status (beta), which updates the user’s Google Talk or Gmail chat status message with their Latitude location, and Google Public Location Badge, which publishes the user’s Latitude location on their blog or personal Web site.
"You can choose to show just the city that you are in or you can have your device’s location detected automatically, using GPS, Wi-Fi, or cell tower ID, which provides a more specific location," Rohan Seth and Chris Lambert, software engineers for Google Mobile, wrote in a May 4 corporate blog posting.
Google rival Yahoo already attempted to counter Latitude with a Facebook application, called Friends on Fire, that used the Fire Eagle geo-location platform to let users display their real-time location on a map. Yahoo originally launched Fire Eagle in August 2008.
And for anyone whose feels that Google expanding Latitude is yet another way in which the search engine giant is slowly invading the collective privacy, there is always the option to switch off – or never switch on – the service entirely.

paidContent.org - Why IAC Covets Yahoo Personals

So what if IAC (NSDQ: IACI) decided to go after Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) Personals, as Barry Diller (pictured, right) suggested it might Wednesday? A combination of the two properties would certainly make strategic sense. Bernstein & Co. Analyst Jeffrey Lindsay points out in a report that IAC's Match.com already provides personal listings on MSN and AOL (NYSE: TWX), so by adding Yahoo Personals, it would now presumably have access to all three major portals. More heft (together Yahoo Personals and Match.com would bring in double the unique visitors as their nearest competitor, according to comScore) would also help fend off growing competition from free, exclusively ad-supported dating sites. And perhaps most importantly for IAC, it would allow the company to double-down on what is likely already its best-performing business.
Diller raised the possibility of an acquisition during IAC's earnings call Wednesday, saying: "We'd love to (have) Yahoo Personals, and I think there is some initial discussion about that, whether they're going away or not is, of course, enormously speculative." Enormously speculative is probably too strong. Yahoo is busy jettisoning non-core assets under new CEO Carol Bartz, and the dating site would likely fit the bill. HotJobs reportedly is on the block and GeoCities is being shuttered soon.
Citigroup's Mark Mahaney puts Yahoo Personal's value at $500 million, working under the assumption that Yahoo Personals brings in just as much money as Match.com. In the past, IAC executives have said that they would prefer smaller acquisitions. But asked during the call, whether he would consider an acquisition in the range of $500 million to $1 billion, Diller said "it would be on the plate." He cautioned though that it would have to bolster a key business for the company. Like Match.com, perhaps?

How should I feel after finding a yahoo personal ad that my fiance of 3 yrs

I came across it while incredibly bored. I thought I’d check to see if my brother had his ad still on the yahoo site, so I could be nosy and read what he’d written this time.. The search I did was for men in the area, aged around my brothers age. The first one that popped up was my fiance. Picture and all. Said he lived alone, with pets. He lives with me and OUR pets. Said he was single. Well, what am I? I confronted him, he said someone else did it, argued, then said it was 5 years old, (well the pic was, I admit that, it was taken back about 45 lbs ago), and the ad was NOT there 5 months ago, the last time I had searched for my brother’s profile.I made my fiance delete his profile (while he played dumb, I sat and instructed him to log in his email, edit profile, delete!) I’m not stupid by all means, I helped my brother with his profile, and I know how it operates thru your email, etc. But my fiance evidently thinks I’m computer stupid, because now he insists that it had to have magically appeared somehow, and that he didn’t do it! I told him that the web is not LuckyCharm Land and things don’t just ‘magically appear’. UGH> I have lost my trust in him, and now I’m thinking back on days he’d gone to town for something and was gone for 3 hrs, or how many times he’s walked away from me when his cell phone rang, to talk further out in the yard, or how many times I’ve been at work trying to call home with no answer, only to get ahold of him later on and he’d say he was sleeping and didn’t hear the phone.I’m driving myself nuts, and I don’t know how to stop it! I’m hurt, and he’s in denial. I’m doubting our relationship, and he doesn’t seem to care. He would never apologize, he thinks his denial is enough. How many other times has he lied to me! (I’ve seen his adamant ‘denial face’ before.)Oh, how can I stop questioning myself, I feel like I don’t know if he’s actually cheated or not? If I hadn’t been bored that day, I may not have searched for my brother’s ad, and still wouldn’t have known about my fiance’s ad. Questions, questions…I have thought about walking away, but I have so much time, energy, and work invested in this relationship. Everything we’ve bought together is in both names, I’ve completely landscaped the yards into beauty, and so much has merged. I don’t know why we havent’ gotten married yet, just too busy I guess. We’ve been living together as a couple, just haven’t said the I do’s.I have thought about revenge, placing an ad telling locals what he was doing behind my back. Not sure if yahoo personals would post it.I guess I’m through the crying part, now I’m at the mad stage. Any ideas out there???Note to add: the ad placed had said "active within the past week", and it is his house we live in now, I was renting when we met and he invited me here. The pets are 3 dogs (His, Mine, and an Ours) and the cat is mine. But we call them all Ours. The ad was not there 5 months ago, the last time I had searched for my brother. It was an old pic, but not an old ad.I guess I'm not through with the crying part. Reading some of your responses has me crying again. I am taking this very seriously, and having few freinds I can confide in, I am taking your advise to heart. Thank you everyone for giving me an outsiders view. I'm too tied up on the inside

So Long, YAHOO GeoCities: We Forgot You Still Existed

GeoCities, a free Web hosting service that achieved fame in the mid-90s, died Thursday at the Yahoo headquarters in Silicon Valley. GeoCities was 15 years old.
GeoCities had suffered a long and drawn-out battle with its health over the past decade. An antiquated service model and outdated technology are widely blamed for the struggle. An official cause of death, however, has yet to be determined.
GeoCities: 1995 - 2009
GeoCities was born as "Beverly Hills Internet" in the winter of 1995. Its parents, David Bohnett and John Rezner, wanted to create a virtual community that mimicked the real world, with pages hosted in "cyber cities" and other similarly nauseating concepts.
Both teenagers and first-generation Internet dorks (known then as "former SysOps") flocked to the service, setting up personal pages in the "cyber cities" of their choice. Despite GeoCities' built-in watermarks and on-page advertisements, the site's popularity continued to climb, and the shame its users should have felt for creating abhorrent content within its servers continued to remain repressed
One year later, in 1999, GeoCities underwent its largest transformation when the yet-to-become-a-punchline company Yahoo purchased it for $4.7 billion. Yahoo removed many of GeoCities' trademark assets, including the "cyber city" foundation of the service, and attempted to transform GeoCities into a profit-producing venture.
It was around this time that GeoCities began showing the first symptoms of the medical issues that would plague it for the remainder of its life. GeoCities grew weaker by the month. The proliferation of low-cost hosting options, combined with the increasing popularity of social network-style services in place of personal home pages, only contributed to its demise.
GeoCities is survived by two cousins, Angelfire and Tripod, along with an uncle, Jeeves. All three are believed to be terminally ill.
Of the 12 remaining GeoCities users, only one was available for comment. "Holy crap!" said the user, a red-faced fellow named Strong Bad. "The scroll buttons and animated GIFs on that site were unbeatable."
The GeoCities site is expected to remain functional through midyear as a tribute to its life. Funeral arrangements are now pending.
